What’s that smell?

Now that we are nearing the summer months and we begin using our air conditioners on a more regular basis. Some of our customers mention that there is a strange odor when they turn on their unit.

Below we will dive into a few different odors and what they might indicate concerning your AC Unit. Also, you can stop blaming your husband that the smell is his feet 😊

Musty Smell

If the air coming through your supply registers reminds you of a wet towel or wet dog, then mildew is more than likely the issue. It is probable that mold and/or fungus is growing on or around your outside AC unit. This is a very common issue. HVAC units not only moderates the temperature inside of your home, but it also eliminates or lowers the humidity levels as well. If your compressor is not draining correctly, mold and mildew will grow. We recommend changing the filters more frequently to help remedy the problem.

Burning Smell

If you have a burning smell coming through your vents, then you are experiencing an electrical problem. Traditionally these issues happen with older homes because of the age of their AC units. Usually the repairs end up being replacing the circuit board and/or replace the blower fan because its motor.

Vinegar Smell

The smell of vinegar coming through your supply registers usually indicates stagnant water in your AC unit. As mentioned earlier regarding the smell of mildew, if this issue is not addressed then mold and mildew will become an issue later down the road.

As you can imagine this is not an all-inclusive list. If you notice any of the above smells or another smell/sound coming from your AC unit, make sure to contact us at Alpine Heating & Cooling at one of the below methods.
