Why Aren't You Blowing Hot Air?

When temperatures drop in Northeast Ohio, the last thing you want is a furnace blowing cold air instead of heat. Fortunately, not every heating problem means an expensive repair.

Before calling for furnace service, here are five things worth checking.

1. Check Your Thermostat

Make sure your thermostat is set to HEAT and the fan is set to AUTO rather than ON. When the fan is set to ON, it may circulate room-temperature air even when the furnace isn't heating.

2. Inspect Your Furnace Filter

A dirty air filter restricts airflow and can cause your furnace to overheat and shut off its burners. Check your filter monthly during heating season and replace it when dirty, following the manufacturer's recommendations.

3. Check Your Air Vents

Blocked supply vents or return air grilles can restrict airflow throughout your home. Make sure furniture, rugs and other objects aren't blocking them.

4. Give Your Furnace a Few Minutes

Some furnaces briefly circulate cooler air during startup or shutdown. However, if your furnace continues blowing cold air and your home isn't warming up, something may be wrong.

5. Know When to Call a Professional

If your furnace still isn't producing heat, the problem could involve an ignition component, flame sensor, safety control or another mechanical issue. These problems should be diagnosed by a qualified HVAC technician.
