The Great Candle Scandal

Alpine Heating and Cooling • June 18, 2019

Candles are a great addition to any home because of the warmth & coziness they add to a home. However, the down side is that some candles can cause an indoor air pollution problem by emitting soot into the air. This soot can the infiltrate your AC and Heating ductwork causing and exacerbating a multitude of issues.

Over the years it seems that petroleum-based candles and scented candles can wreak the most havoc. Most candles today are made from paraffin wax that when burned release toxins and and soot into the air. If the some of the fabric in your home is looking dingy or gray, or are developing a dark film, you may want to experiment with different candle types or discontinue burning candles for a period of time to see if the issue persists.

Other health concerns these candles have been known to make worse is allergies & asthma. The soot build up being pumped into the air can have a negative effective on those that already struggle with these issues.

Safer alternatives to paraffin based candles

Soy candles are a great alternative to petroleum-based candles. Soy candles traditionally have a much longer life span than petroleum-based candles. are non-toxic, less likely to cause allergy issues, and produce almost no soot.

Beeswax is another option that is making a comeback. Beeswax is also less likely to cause allergy issues. It generally does not produce toxins or soot when burned. It tends to be more expensive than paraffin candles but it does burn longer. Always check labels, as some manufacturers do add paraffin.

As summers get hotter and technology keeps advancing, the air conditioning systems of the future are being built to do more than just cool your home. They're being designed to think, learn, and save you money—all while being better for the planet. 1. AI Is Changing Everything Artificial Intelligence is becoming a game-changer in home HVAC. Smart thermostats and systems are now using AI to learn your daily habits, predict when you’ll be home, and automatically adjust settings for comfort and efficiency. Some systems can even monitor weather patterns and energy rates to cool your home when it’s cheapest and most efficient. Think of it as comfort on autopilot—with lower utility bills. 2. Smarter Zoning and Voice Control With AI and smart home integration, you’ll be able to cool specific rooms based on usage, control your system with voice commands, and get alerts before something breaks. AI-powered diagnostics are helping technicians fix problems faster and even prevent breakdowns before they happen. 3. Eco-Friendly Refrigerants and Efficiency New AC systems are using refrigerants with a much lower environmental impact while operating more efficiently. Technologies like variable-speed compressors and inverter systems allow your system to run more smoothly, use less energy, and last longer. 4. Solar and Energy Storage Integration Expect to see more systems paired with solar panels and battery storage. These setups reduce your reliance on the grid and make cooling more sustainable—especially during peak summer demand. 5. Cleaner Indoor Air, Automatically Future AC units will come standard with advanced filtration, humidity control, and UV-C light to kill bacteria and viruses—all automatically managed through smart sensors that adjust based on the air quality in your home. Ready for the Future? At Alpine Heating, Cooling, Plumbing & Refrigeration , we're keeping a close eye on where HVAC is headed—so you don’t have to. From AI-driven comfort systems to ultra-efficient cooling, we’re here to help you upgrade with confidence. If you are in need of service on your current AC system please give us a call and we'd be glad to begin the process of evaluating your needs along with your budget and coming up with a plan for your heating, cooling & air quality needs.
