Maintaining a Healthy Climate Control: Cleaning Air Conditioner Filters

June 21, 2023

To ensure optimal performance, it's important to clean your air conditioner filters regularly. The specific instructions for your system can be found in the manufacturer's instruction manual. If you no longer have the manual, you can visit the manufacturer's website to access a copy.

Here's what you'll need for the cleaning process:

Vacuum cleaner

Gloves

Face mask

Safety glasses

Cleaning cloth

Soap/detergent

Warm water

Step ladder (if necessary)

Before you begin, make sure to switch off the power at the wall!

Step 1: Removing the Filters

The process of accessing the air filters may vary depending on the type of system, but the cleaning method remains the same.

For split systems and window air conditioners, lift the front panel from the bottom and slide out the filters.

In the case of ducted air conditioning, the filters are usually located at the return vent, which can be found within a wall or the roof. You might need a step ladder to reach them. Unscrew or slide open the panel and lift the filter out. Be cautious of falling dust and wear a mask and goggles for protection.

Step 2: Vacuuming Dust Buildup

Cleaning the clogged air filters can be done in various ways, but using a vacuum is the easiest and least messy option. Gently run the vacuum over the filter, ensuring that you suction all the surface material. Remember to handle the reusable filters delicately to avoid any damage.

Alternatively, you can take the filters outside and brush off the dust over a waste bin.

Step 3: Rinsing in Warm Soapy Water

Fill a sink or tub with warm, soapy water and wash the filters. A mild detergent will suffice for this task.

Since filters can be fragile, it's recommended to use a cleaning cloth instead of a coarse brush or scouring pad. Once cleaned, allow the filters to dry completely in a safe area.

Replacement air filters can be obtained from the manufacturer when needed.

Step 4: Cleaning the AC Unit

Gently vacuum around the filter area to remove any residual dust. Wipe the surroundings with a damp cloth as necessary. After ensuring that both the filters and AC unit are completely dry, slide the filters back in, close the cover, and switch the power back on.

Cleaning the Outdoor Unit

The outdoor unit also requires attention. Begin by sweeping or blowing away any leaves or debris surrounding it, as they can obstruct airflow around the internal coils. Next, wipe down the unit to remove dirt buildup and excessive grime.

Using a vacuum or dustbuster, clear any dust that may have entered through the air intake. However, it's important to note that removing the covers yourself is not advised, as it could potentially damage the unit and void the warranty. Instead, it's best to leave the cleaning of the internal components to a professional during an annual service.

By following these steps, you'll be able to maintain your air conditioning unit and extend its lifespan while ensuring a constant supply of fresh, clean air for healthier breathing. Regular maintenance and cleaning are essential for both your comfort and energy savings in the long run.

Big Changes Are Coming to Your AC: Meet R-454B (And Say Goodbye to R-410A) If you're like most homeowners, you probably don’t think about what’s inside your air conditioner—until it stops working on a hot day. But starting in 2025, there's a big change coming to what cools your home behind the scenes, and it’s called R-454B . So what is R-454B? And why should you care? Don’t worry—we’re breaking it down in plain English (no tech talk allowed). ❄️ Out with the Old: R-410A For the last couple of decades, most home air conditioners have used a refrigerant called R-410A . This is the refrigerant that helps your AC pull heat out of your home and keep things nice and cool. But here’s the problem: R-410A isn’t great for the environment. It’s got a high global warming potential —meaning it contributes to climate change. So, just like we phased out older harmful refrigerants (remember Freon?), now it’s R-410A’s turn to retire. 🌎 In with the New: R-454B Enter R-454B —the cooler, greener cousin of R-410A. This new refrigerant is becoming the industry standard starting in 2025 . Here’s why it’s a big deal: ✅ It’s way better for the planet. It has about 75% less environmental impact than R-410A. ✅ It still keeps you cool. It works very similarly to R-410A, so no worries there. ⚠️ It’s mildly flammable , but before you panic—this is only an issue if someone is doing something really wrong. When handled properly by trained pros, it’s totally safe. 🏡 What This Means for You If your AC is getting up there in age (10+ years old), and you're thinking about replacing it soon, your next unit will probably use R-454B . Here’s what you need to know: 🔧 You can’t just put R-454B into your current system. It’s not a “drop-in” refrigerant. So if your AC still uses R-410A, it’ll need to be replaced—not just refilled. 💰 New systems may cost a bit more at first. Because they’re built differently to work with the new refrigerant, prices could be slightly higher. But they’ll also be more energy efficient , which could save you money in the long run. 🧰 Our Techs will be trained for this. We are already learning the ins and outs of R-454B, so you’ll be in good hands. 🤔 Should I Replace My AC Now? Not necessarily! If your current AC is working fine, there’s no need to panic or rush into anything. But if: Your system is more than 10 years old You’re facing expensive repairs You want to upgrade to a more eco-friendly, efficient unit ...then 2025 is a great time to consider the switch. 🎉 Final Thoughts You don’t need to become an HVAC expert to stay cool. Just know that R-454B is the future , and it’s here to help your home stay comfortable while being kinder to the planet. Got questions? As spring arrives, it's the perfect time to ensure your home's heating and cooling systems operate efficiently, maintaining a comfortable indoor environment while keeping energy costs in check. Here are some expert tips to optimize your HVAC system this season: 1. Schedule a Professional HVAC Maintenance Check Regular maintenance is crucial for the longevity and efficiency of your HVAC system . A professional technician can inspect, clean, and tune up your system, addressing potential issues before they escalate. This proactive approach ensures optimal performance and can prevent costly repairs down the line. 2. Replace Air Filters Regularly Clean air filters are essential for proper airflow and indoor air quality. It's recommended to replace your HVAC filters every 1-3 months, depending on usage and household factors like pets or allergies. This simple step can enhance system efficiency and reduce energy consumption. 3. Utilize Programmable or Smart Thermostats Investing in a programmable or smart thermostat allows you to set temperature schedules that align with your daily routine. For instance, you can program the thermostat to lower the temperature when you're away and raise it before you return, ensuring comfort without unnecessary energy use. 4. Seal Air Leaks and Insulate Inspect your home for drafts, particularly around windows, doors, and ductwork. Sealing these leaks with caulk or weatherstripping prevents conditioned air from escaping, enhancing your HVAC system's efficiency. Additionally, ensuring your home is well-insulated helps maintain consistent indoor temperatures. 5. Set Optimal Thermostat Temperatures Adjusting your thermostat to energy-efficient settings can lead to significant savings. Experts recommend setting your thermostat to 68°F during heating periods and 75°F during cooling periods, adjusting as necessary for personal comfort. 6. Ensure Unobstructed Vents and Registers Blocked vents can hinder airflow, causing uneven heating or cooling and forcing your system to work harder. Ensure that furniture, drapes, or other objects do not obstruct vents and registers, allowing for efficient air distribution throughout your home. 7. Consider Upgrading to Energy-Efficient Systems If your HVAC system is outdated, upgrading to a more energy-efficient model can provide better performance and lower energy bills. Modern systems often come with advanced features that enhance comfort and efficiency. By implementing these strategies, you can ensure your home remains comfortable throughout the spring while optimizing your HVAC system's efficiency and reducing energy costs. Regular attention to maintenance and smart usage habits are key to a well-functioning heating and cooling system.
