3 Ways to Improve Your Home's Heating Efficiency

November 3, 2022

Cooler weather indicates the cozy season is fast approaching. Unfortunately, it also means sky-high heating bills for many families. Saving money and keeping the home at a comfortable temperature can seem impossible, but there are ways to get the most out of your furnace without compromising your budget. Here is a guide for improving your home's heating efficiency this winter.

How to Increase the Efficiency of Your Heating System

1. Adjust Your Settings

Whether during the day or night, it's tempting to raise the heat dial all the way up when you're cold. However, this can have an unpleasant impact on your utility bills. Instead, save energy by setting the thermostat at 68 degrees during waking hours and 5 to 10 degrees colder when sleeping or away from home. You can adjust the settings based on your lifestyle and schedule, but this small change can make a big difference.

2. Take Extra Measures to Stay Warm

You don't need to rely solely on the furnace to remain warm during the winter. Warm the home by letting in natural sunlight during the day, then shutting the curtains or blinds at sundown to create an extra layer of insulation.

You can also spend time in rooms that heat up naturally during use, like the kitchen while the oven is on or the living room if it features a wood-burning fireplace. For a comfortable way to stay warm, snuggle up in a cozy blanket or put on a sweater, socks, or slippers.

3. Change the Filter

The flow of warm air from the heating system is contingent on a clean filter. This component traps particles from the air to improve air quality, but it will become clogged over time. If neglected, the furnace will work harder to push air throughout the home and maintain a pleasant indoor environment. As a result, the system will experience unnecessary wear and tear. Fortunately, you can prevent this problem by changing the filter every 30 days.
