3 Reasons to Change Your HVAC Filter
Changing the filter in your HVAC system is a simple but crucial part of its maintenance routine. In fact, you should change it at least every 90 days and more often if you have pets or the filter looks gray and dirty. Doing so will help you avoid the following problems.
What Happens if You Don’t Change Your HVAC Filter?
1. Reduced Airflow
Air won't pass through a clogged filter easily, which means airflow around the whole HVAC system will be reduced. This forces the system to work harder, putting strain on components. If this happens for long periods, the equipment's lifespan will be diminished, and some parts may need premature repairs or replacements.
2. Frozen Evaporator Coils
Another consequence of low airflow is that warm air won't pass over the evaporator coils. The refrigerant inside may then become too cold, causing moisture along the coils to freeze. When this happens, refrigerant won't be able to absorb heat, and the HVAC will become less efficient. Additionally, the compressor may overheat and burn out.
3. Higher Energy Bills
When HVAC efficiency is reduced due to low airflow or frozen coils, the system has to run more frequently to reach the desired temperature. This could leave rooms in your home too hot or cold and lead to increased energy bills. Filters are inexpensive, and the cost of replacing them is much lower than replacing components or paying high bills.
