When to Repair & When to Replace an HVAC Unit
HVAC Unit Repairs vs. Replacements
When to Seek Heating Repairs
If your HVAC unit is relatively new and it's the first time you've had a problem with it, you'll likely only need repairs. With routine maintenance, heating systems generally last for about 10 to 15 years. So, if your unit's age is barely five years old, HVAC contractors can generally solve the problem.
The nature of the problem can also illuminate what needs to be done. For example, if your unit is running more frequently than usual or it's making strange sounds, that could mean a component needs to be cleaned, tightened, or replaced.
When to Get a Replacement
If you have an older unit, closer to a decade old, then it's likely time for a full replacement. A newer unit will not only be more reliable, but it will also be more energy-efficient than its predecessors. As a result, you may be spending more on the upfront costs of a replacement installation, but you'll be saving more money in the long run due to the energy savings.
Factoring in the overall price of repairs is another way to determine whether it's better to get a replacement. If the total costs of the past year's repairs and an upcoming one are adding up, compare those costs to the price of a new unit. Your HVAC contractor can give you an accurate quote on both the repairs and the replacement.
