Three signs that you Walk-In Cooler may be walking out on you

Alpine Heating and Cooling • February 17, 2021

We at Alpine Heating & Cooling have been servicing commercial refrigeration equipment for years! One of our largest customers was Commercial Kitchens just outside of Mt. Hope. They are a commercial kitchen equipment dealer offering everything from spatula’s to walk in freezers.

In April of 2019 Alpine Heating & Cooling acquired Commercial Kitchens to join forces and make a true “One Stop Shop” for all HeatingCooling & Commercial Refrigeration Sales & Service needs

Here are some things we’ve learned along the way... No business-owner likes to hear that it’s time to replace a walk-in refrigerator or freezer . While they are necessary for operating in the food industry, they can be expensive to purchase and/or repair.

If your walk-in unit is needing minor repairs it is definitely worth proceeding with ASAP as lost product or loss of efficiency will cost far more than the repair. However, if your unit is requiring multiple repairs over and over and the costs are adding up it is probably time to look at purchasing a new unit. Like the old adage, “spend a dollar now and save two later”.

Here are three signs that it may be time to start looking into a new walk-in cooler:

1. REGULAR LEAKS

Damaged or worn out seals lead to water leaks. These leaks lead to standing water that you maybe cannot even see. This can cause ice buildup, or mold and mildew. If this issue goes on long enough your likely to deal with an unhappy health inspector.

2. ICE OR FROST BUILD UP

If you are scraping ice out of your cooler on a regular basis or you are losing product to frost bite, there may be an excess moisture that is accumulating and freezing. The moisture is often caused by air leaks between panels and/ or other cooler components.

3. FLUCTUATING TEMPERATURES

Though you might be working all the time your walk-in freezer should not be. If you notice the unit running constantly or are seeing a large fluctuation in temperatures, it’s time to at least contact our service department to take a look. It could be as simple as a thermostat issue or it could be the sign that your freezers on its last leg.

With our strong working relationship between our two companies you will be hard pressed to find another company that can give the level of sales and service that we can provide. For any of your HeatingCoolingRefrigeration or Commercial Kitchen Equipment needs please contact us.

If you’ve heard people talking about “new refrigerant rules” for air conditioners and heat pumps, you’re not alone. Homeowners are wondering if their current AC system is suddenly outdated or impossible to repair. The simple answer is no — you do not need to replace your air conditioner just because refrigerant rules have changed. What Changed With HVAC Refrigerants? The HVAC industry is moving away from higher-GWP refrigerants, including R-410A, and toward newer refrigerants with lower environmental impact. Under the EPA’s refrigerant transition rules, many new residential air conditioners and heat pumps manufactured after January 1, 2025 must use lower-GWP refrigerants. Existing systems can still be serviced, and parts used to repair existing systems are not subject to the same restrictions as new equipment. For homeowners, that means your current air conditioner or heat pump does not automatically need replaced. Can My Current AC Still Be Repaired? Yes. If your system uses R-410A, it can still be serviced. The bigger question is whether a repair makes financial sense. As older refrigerants become less common over time, certain repairs — especially refrigerant leak repairs — may become more expensive. That does not mean every older system should be replaced, but it does make the repair-versus-replace decision more important. When Should You Consider Replacing Your AC? You may want to consider replacement if: -Your system is over 10–15 years old -You are facing a major repair -Your AC has a refrigerant leak -Your energy bills keep climbing -Your home has uneven temperatures -Your system uses older equipment that is no longer under warranty If your system is newer, running well, and only needs a minor repair, replacement may not be necessary. Don’t Panic — Get Honest Advice The new refrigerant rules are a real change in the HVAC industry, but they should not be used to scare homeowners into replacing equipment before they need to. At Alpine Heating, Cooling, Plumbing & Refrigeration, we help homeowners understand their options clearly. Whether your system needs a simple repair, a refrigerant leak check, or a full replacement estimate, our goal is to give you honest information so you can make the best decision for your home.
