The HVAC March Madness

Alpine Heating and Cooling • March 16, 2022

When most people (including us if we’re being honest 😊 ) think of March their first thoughts head to High School & college hoops. March Madness doesn’t only apply to the court; it also applies to Ohio weather. With temperature swings of up to 30 degrees in a single day it seems like Mother Nature can’t decide if it’s Spring or Winter.

The stress this weather can put on your home’s heating and cooling systems. The HVAC joke for Spring in Ohio is that your furnace works 1st. and 3rd. shift and your Air Conditioner works 2nd. 😊

Avoid the Madness

There are a couple tasks to consider during March you can do to help your systems through these tweener months.

#1 Heating system- Don’t kick the can (down the road)

Don’t wait until your system breaks down to give us a call. We encourage our customers to give us a call as soon as they start experiencing any type of issues. It can be tempting to try to patch or just “make it through” any issues with your furnace knowing that warmer temperatures are coming.

While this may be true to a certain extent, undoubtedly the World will continue to spin, and Winter will come back again. You could be left in a situation paying higher Emergency Call fees and/or being left out in the cold depending upon call volume at that time. Almost every time in life it pays to prepare and not react, so if you ignore today what might cost you $100.00 could end up costing you $500.00 or more next Winter.

#2 Air Conditioner

March and April are some of the best months to schedule the preventative maintenance for your Air Conditioning system. This will allow your system to be ready for the first hot days of spring and our schedule is generally more open to work around yours. It’s like the saying, “the early bird get’s the worm”.

Knock 2 birds out with one call

One of the most common things we hear from our clients is that “it’s not the price, it’s just not on the forefront of our minds”. We don’t blame clients a bit. We get it… It’s just like auto maintenance that we all are guilty of forgetting.

We came together and developed a plan that we think is reasonably priced but also takes the maintenance responsibility of your heating and cooling system’s off of our clients shoulders.

We offer a few different options, but our most popular option is our Elevated Residential Service Agreement. This includes all the below items at $179.00 a year.

*Spring & Fall visits included in price

*System Check & Cleaning

*Voltage Check

*Gas Pressure Check

*Airflow Check

*Replacement of 1" Filters (If Applicable)

*10% Off of all Labor & Materials

*Priority Service

*Emergency & After Hours Fees Waived

If you’re interested in this plan or looking at other options, please reach out to our office via one of the below methods.

If you’ve heard people talking about “new refrigerant rules” for air conditioners and heat pumps, you’re not alone. Homeowners are wondering if their current AC system is suddenly outdated or impossible to repair. The simple answer is no — you do not need to replace your air conditioner just because refrigerant rules have changed. What Changed With HVAC Refrigerants? The HVAC industry is moving away from higher-GWP refrigerants, including R-410A, and toward newer refrigerants with lower environmental impact. Under the EPA’s refrigerant transition rules, many new residential air conditioners and heat pumps manufactured after January 1, 2025 must use lower-GWP refrigerants. Existing systems can still be serviced, and parts used to repair existing systems are not subject to the same restrictions as new equipment. For homeowners, that means your current air conditioner or heat pump does not automatically need replaced. Can My Current AC Still Be Repaired? Yes. If your system uses R-410A, it can still be serviced. The bigger question is whether a repair makes financial sense. As older refrigerants become less common over time, certain repairs — especially refrigerant leak repairs — may become more expensive. That does not mean every older system should be replaced, but it does make the repair-versus-replace decision more important. When Should You Consider Replacing Your AC? You may want to consider replacement if: -Your system is over 10–15 years old -You are facing a major repair -Your AC has a refrigerant leak -Your energy bills keep climbing -Your home has uneven temperatures -Your system uses older equipment that is no longer under warranty If your system is newer, running well, and only needs a minor repair, replacement may not be necessary. Don’t Panic — Get Honest Advice The new refrigerant rules are a real change in the HVAC industry, but they should not be used to scare homeowners into replacing equipment before they need to. At Alpine Heating, Cooling, Plumbing & Refrigeration, we help homeowners understand their options clearly. Whether your system needs a simple repair, a refrigerant leak check, or a full replacement estimate, our goal is to give you honest information so you can make the best decision for your home.
