HVAC Myths

Alpine Heating and Cooling • August 19, 2020

Most people use HVAC systems to heat and cool their homes throughout the year. Most people don’t fully understand how these units operate, which can lead to some avoidable issues. Listed below are 3 common myths you’ve probably heard.

Myth: Lowering the Thermostat Cools Your Home Faster

While lowering the thermostat will help your home reach a cooler temperature, it won't happen quickly. Air conditioners run at one speed, and lowering the thermostat a few degrees at once won't change its cooling capacity. Instead, it will cause the unit to run for an extended period, which can make it overheat and put unnecessary stress on its parts. Additionally, if you lower the thermostat beyond your typical comfort zone it can lead to a lot of wasted energy.

Myth: Leaving the Thermostat at a Set Temperature Saves Money

Many homeowners incorrectly believe that if they set the thermostat and never change it, they can save money on their electric bill. Because the outside temperature affects the inside of your home, never moving the thermostat can cause the HVAC system to run continuously or not enough. To avoid either extreme install a programmable thermostat that ensures the temperature automatically changes throughout the day to save energy and keep your home comfortable.

Myth: Maintenance Is Only Needed When You Notice a Problem

Regular HVAC maintenance is essential for preventing problems before they happen. Ideally, before you turn on your air conditioner or furnace each season you should have a contractor clean and inspect it. This allows them to look for worn parts and replace them before they break, which could otherwise cause your system to run inefficiently or have a complete breakdown.

TUESDAYS WITH THE TECH FINALE This week Bobby Schmitt from Apple Creek brings an end to our Tuesday's with the Tech Series. Thanks to everyone for taking the time to intereact each week and we hope to do this again in the future! 1. What’s one thing homeowners might not realize about heating & cooling? A: Home comfort is more about humidity than temperature, in the summer a whole home dehumidifier will keep your home comfortable without having to keep the temperature as low, and in the winter a humidifier will cause the home to still be comfortable at a lower temperature 2. Favorite State you’ve visited other than Ohio? A: North Carolina 3. Would you rather be chased by one angry goose or ten aggressive squirrels? A: One angry goose, having ten small things running around is hard to manage, one larger thing is more controllable. 4. What’s one piece of advice you’d give a homeowner to avoid breakdowns? A: Have maintenance done. Keep filters and the outdoor unit clean. 5. Remove One for the rest of your life… 1. Pizza 2. Cheeseburgers 3. Pasta A: Pasta.
