How Can You Tell When You Need a Furnace Replacement?

January 13, 2021

Your furnace is responsible for heating your home's air before it's distributed through the ductwork. Without a functional unit, your family will feel the cold air quickly. As such, you should be able to identify potential problems early to get repairs or a replacement before the system breaks down completely. Here are a few signs of failing equipment to watch for.

1. Increasing Heating Bills

Keep old heating bills so you can compare utility costs year by year. If the expenses increase with no explanation, a faulty furnace may be to blame. Older units lose efficiency and will have to run more frequently to heat air, expending more fuel and costing more money.

2. New Noises

Strange noises could indicate that a repair or replacement is needed. For example, if you hear a rattling noise before the furnace blower switches on, the heat exchanger may be faulty. This is a common cause of carbon monoxide leaks and should be checked by a professional immediately.

3. Changing Pilot Flame Color

A gas furnace is supposed to have a bright blue flame, so if it's flickering or weak, the fuel isn't being burned thoroughly. Additionally, a yellow flame could indicate the system is dirty or partially blocked. Color changes can also mean carbon monoxide isn't being properly vented.

4. Old Age

Average furnaces last around 15 to 20 years. Although some models can last a few years longer with regular maintenance, they won't run as efficiently as new options. If your system is nearing the end of its lifespan, start looking into replacement options.
